Electric Ferries

We are in exciting times now with the development of alternatives to fossil fueled vessels

One of those alternatives is the rise in popularity of the fully electric powered vessels. It appears the most viable type of vessel for design or conversion to all electric is the river commuter catamaran ferry.

Due to the amount of batteries that need to be carried to support an all electric vessel, the operational profile of river and bay ferries seems to suit best, as they generally have a mixture of slow speed and high speed. The slower times giving the vessel longer periods between charge ups and less stored power required on board.

Electric ferry services are popping up around the globe now, and as demand creates higher production we hope in time to see lower costs in the motors, batteries and on board systems for these vessels. One such company in Norway is EVOY and they have developed both inboard electric motors as well as a range of outboard electric motors. Danfoss electric motors are also working in collaboration with associate suppliers to offer packages for electric vessels. The ferry service in Bangkok, Thailand is an example of this.
